Tip of the Trade: Limit Your Liability
By Andy @ 1:17 PM :: 556 Views :: 3 Comments :: :: All, Tips of the Trade

Accepting responsibility is part of owning a business.  But what can be done to limit your liability when your company didn't cause the damage.

With high ticket items like floors, cabinets and appliances, you need to make sure you cover yourself.  Start by always marking the time when you arrive to a job.

Cell Phone Time Stamp - Use your cell phone to mark the time exact time.  Your cell phone time is set by a satellite and cannot be changed by the user.  This makes it possible to prove when the damage occurred.

Photo Record - Tape a card near any damaged area and take a few photos.  If possible, take the pictures in the presence of the customer so there is no misunderstanding when the job is complete.

Nothing is full proof, but these tips can help you prove your case to reasonable customers.  Your pictures can show them the way it was before you started your work.  In many cases, the customer will offer an apology and all is well.

In those rare instances the customer won't accept your proof, these tips can help protect you against further action.
