Sterling Surfaces
PRESS RELEASE
Sterling, MA

Light ShowersA Solid Surface fabrication shop based in Sterling Ma, came away with two top honors at an international design competion for industry professionals. The projects utilized Corian Solid Surface and a new material to the Industry Lumistone, a Solid Surface with a Glow-in-the-dark feature by Tower Industries.

Best in Show - LightShowers

LightShowers designed by New York based Morris Sato Studio worked closely with Sterling Surfaces to create a unique look with Solid Surface never achieved before. The project involved a Corian Solid Surface platform and organically shaped Corian seating. The Corian served as a projection screen as well as video was projected onto the platform. Taking advantage of the translucent properties of Corian, a dramatic look was achieved. Over 75,000 different people worldwide have viewed LightShowers, a true work of art!

Best Commercial/Institutional - Senior Spot Bench at Choate Rosemary Hall School
 Lumistone Bench

The Senior Spot bench located at the Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford CT. is a 130-foot long Corian outdoor bench with over 7,000 letters for the 400 donor names inserted out of a photoluminscent material called Lumistone. Studio ABK architect Mai Wu, when asked why Corian replied, “All other options would have required lighting under the benches. They where concerned a metal bench would be too hot to sit on. Some people were concerned about the maintenance for wood overtime. I cant say I know for sure why they chose Corian but I’am glad they did” The fabrication process involved exacting CAD files and the use of a 4 axis CNC and a specialized thermoforming process all supplied by Sterling Surfaces.
