Hey guys,

Just because you can make these things doesn't mean you can't support the cause. I just bought 2 of these thingees from the immaculate David G. How about all you talkers put your money where your mouth is and buy out Davids next lot! Im in for a few more! Thats how us fabnet folks roll!

Lets take Davids lead...and support the Homer Ski Team, hard working kids pulling themselves up by the bootstraps with the guidance from an industry leader like our esteemed David G! How freaking American and cool is that?

I'm getting worn out just reading about all this stuff.

Joe

Joe, do like I do.  When I see where you started a thread, I just don't klick on it, so easy a Dave man can do it.

Howdy David,

I think Joe was referring to how much work you have put into making the cutting boards.

I could be wrong, but that is the way I read it.

Hey Andy,   Somehow  my wife, Mady and I missed that message  which may have been  encrypted  between  "worn out" and the scrunchy face.

no matter, it's all smiles in the end.  thanks.

this is my latest and final fund raiser project for the season...I think.
A lazy susan made  from scraps.  A compass rose with The team colors and a halibut inlay in the center.   Call me crazy but every time I look at some of the great colors we offer all I can think of is how that color would look in the shape of...what ever.  Halibut can change colors slightly to adapt to the color of the ocean floor,  many colors work for fish.

I can't believe you are making these things without a CNC. Even with a cnc it would be time consuming.

Andy,  I make a precise pattern on builders paper and I use a 10" disk grinder and a stationary spindle sander to get a good fit.  It is time consuming but I must stay busy at night or  else get on the prozac.  Long winters are a killer

You folks are proabably sick of this thread but I wanted to report more on this.

Last night we had the big gala dinner fund raiser for the ski team.   I made the large lazy susan (compass rose)   as a donation for the auction.   It was one of the last  items to come up.  (Andy, hopes it's ok to post $$ about this)              The bidding started at 500.   It quickly rose to 800 back and forth between 3 bidders.  The friends at my table were on the edge of their seat, probably because I answered the question of what I think it would go for. (300.00) I did a little presentation on the material and it's attributes along with the involvement of the skiers.         It jumped up to 900 and lingered....950.....1000!!! Then...up to 1100 and down to 2 bidders........(i think I wiped a tear by then)
Now a hush and all eyes back and forth at the 2 bidders...the auctioneer made some tempting comments to each...silence.......
After a wink to one of the bidders he announced the bid was now up to ....
3000.00!!!!!!!!!!!!   3000 one , twice...sold!!   By the end of the night the booster team had  raised close to $10,000 thanks to all the generous donation by may buisnesses and artist.                           The grand total raised so far from scrap usage is ....   $5500.00    I was approached by the losing bidder, a herring fisherman and a collector of nautical stuff.    "Can you make me one of those with a salmon on it?"
I will make one and the $ will go to the team.   I gave him a price and he didn't even blink.   The team captain also approached me to commission a gift from the class of 2011 to the school.  I said no charge if you come do it with me.

    the end....................of a new beginning

That is incredible you were able to generate this type of donations from scrap material.

David G,

Congratulations for a program conceived and administered with precision, forethought and an unlying commitment to sharing with a worthy cause.

I am sure you will be blessed by God in all that you do.

Thank you for allowing me to participate in your program. BTW, my wife and daughter 'saved" your cutting boards as "Art" and allow no one to cut anything on them. I should have had you sign them, as I am expecting they will be framed and on the wall soon!

Congratulations Dave,  you just topped Gene's $1700.00 for a scrap vanity!  Keep on thinking of new ways to use scrap and make money.

David, someday in the future, when your daughter is teaching her kids about charity and involvement in what matters, you will fill her mind.

Your grandkids will probably know it already.

Last up date for the season.  The Varsity boys took first in our region, girls 4th
The team just returned from the State Championships race in Fairbanks.  They got to fly this year instead of a  580 mile drive and stay in a hotel rather than  sleep on a gym floor,  The war chest was full due to all the efforts of the team and parents.  Here is a pasted clip from a recent article  ( also, the head coach was awarded with "coach of the year")

"The team had another reason to celebrate when Spurkland was named coach of the year.

"It's just confirming what we've been saying for the past three years," Lovett said.

"He deserves it. He's a good coach," Sorensen said.

Spurkland said the award is a little mis-named.

"It's other coaches recognizing energy of a program, which in part is because of coaches, but it's more so because of athletes and parents' support. That's an award that's not recognizing a coach necessarily, but recognizing a program that really is showing a lot of energy and a lot of positive attributes and that, I think, is right on. I'm just happy to be a part of it," said Spurkland.

Having a post-collegiate ski racer for a coach and training on some of the most technically difficult trails in the region has helped the Mariners get to where they are, but the team also credits the support of the community.

"We have the best team parents of anyone," Rowe said.

From gourmet post-race buffets to a custom-built hot-box for ski waxing, parents provide a range of valuable services.

"We're pampered," Miller said."
