    Talk about your nanny states:

"Homebuilders lost an appeal to Commonwealth Court of their challenge of state building codes requiring sprinkler systems be installed in newly constructed single-family homes and townhomes next year.

Builders contend the new code will raise housing prices between $5,000 to $12,000 for some homes, forcing buyers to pay for a feature they don't want, with little discernible safety benefit."

Next up? Every appliance including lights must be hard-wired to avoid potential electrical injuries. Sure, laugh now...

    Tom,
Although I agree with you, is it really any different than the earthquake requirements for CA or the hurricane requirements for FL?

    Bill:

Yes, the difference is that earthquakes and hurricanes have no lobbyists, unlike sprinkler fitters.

In Florida if I pull a permit for a kitchen or bath remodel I have to install smoke detectors in every bedroom etc. hard wired to each other. I suppose this is because some people can't remember to replace the batteries in their smoke detectors.

The sun is up in the US and that earlybird Norm is up and working!

Norm, your post had me laughing. They make you hardwire them? Geez! Unbelievable!
How can someone forget to replace the batterys in a smoke detector?. Mine start beeping in an irritating fashion when the battery goes down to a low power level. Its never during the day or on a rare day when I have nothing to do, its always at 2 or 3 AM, on a day I have to get up early and fly somewhere.

I call those batterys alwaysready instead of everready, because the ones in the smoke detector are always ready to spoil my sleep!

For one thing, if and when a Hurricane hits, it hits a neighborhood, a town, a state...
If you think that zoning folks have the right to force you to spend that kind of money on that kind of item, then you are admitting there is no end to what a town or a state can force you to accept in your home in the name of "safety" if you want to live in that town.

We really need to stop this mandate crap.

so what if the new house goes into an old neighborhood that does not have adaquate water pressure?  Geez... can see where this might go...  crazy!

Plus... sprinkler overhead... 2" line? Who places water lines in the attic in the north or other places that has cold temps.

Another way to kill the homebuilding!

    Tom,

You are correct! I agree wholeheartedly! Expect the following, coming to zoning ordinances near you soon!

1.) The safety harness for the tub, so you don't slip and fall.
2.) No toilet seats! They are afraid if it falls it may bang you on the head if you happen to be vomiting in the toilet and you will drown in the bowl!
3.) Spy vision in yourTV, smoke detectors etc, to make sure you comply!

The rise of the Nanny State!

Reminds me of Winston Smith in Mr. Orwell's book doing his excersizes "You're not trying hard enough Mr. Smith!"

Suppose there was a material that automatically released a foam in any area in your house that caught fire. It could save all your belongings. It could save your family's lives. No matter the cost, we should mandate it to be installed in every new house.

    Good idea?

Heck, why not simply require alarm systems in every home?

I think the home sprinklers are already required in new homes here in California.

But we are rich so it shouldn't matter. Imagine all the jobs it will create. Maybe we can use pipe made out of green material like Hemp to save the planet. It should also cut the expenses to burn victims that are on the Obama Care.

Politicians are stupid. You heard it here first.

Andy,  that explains why I heard Arnold Swarztneggar yelling
"Vee neet Vatar"  it was for the residential sprinklers.
