Hello All,
We were approached by a gay publication that advertises to the gay community in LA. I was curious if anyone else has had any experience with this form of advertising.
I don't know much about the different media outlets in that community and wondered if anyone could help me out.
Thanks in advance,
Andy

Probably excellent payers. Both our gay and Lesbian costumers are generally smart, have decent incomes, and appreciate a good job experience. They have excellent referral potential as well. I'd advertise there unless it were an advocate style (I don't know if you all out west have the advocate newspapers) rag. |

Jon & Tom hit it right on the money . We've had nothing but experiences, and the one thing that has stood out is some of the unique jobs we've done for them. Could be a fountain of gold for you Andy! |

I think I might try it. Good points about the income and ability to pay. |

Hi Andy. Does this mean we will see you, on your website or new marketing campaign with a Pee Wee Herman hairdoo and suit, riding in a pink mini cooper with gonzo speakers blasting out "YMCA" ?
All joking and kidding aside, while I dont agree with the gay nation on thier orientation, as Forrest Gump would say ...Business is as Business does!
Ive worked for commies, nazis, republicans, democrats and every other scum you can think of. Its all about the money for me! I'm guessing you feel the same!

My feeling is, Too each his own". Who am I to say what's right or wrong. I just want to advertise to those that would be interested in purchasing what I have to sell. |

I think the real question is what percentage of the readers of the publication own their own homes and have an income capable of funding a remodeling or new home project. I personally do not care what their persuasion is as long as they are the market demographic for my goods and services. The person trying to sell you the advertising should know the market demographics of the publication. Ask them. |

Andy:
You need to think this through. Suppose Ms. Holierthanthou walks through your door and promises you 10K of cash work, but only on the condition that you abandon your advertising in the gay publication. I'd figure that one out ahead of time.
Gays boycotted Proposition 8 supporters, as is their right. I'd expect no less from the bible-thumpers.
(Thread drift... Fortunately, the California courts have recently undone the bigotry enshrined in the Cali Constitution by Prop 8, which prevented state recognition of gay marriage. What the Supremes don't undo, the demographics of the country will. Young people support gay marriage in overwhelming numbers. Like allowing blacks and whites to intermarry, it's only a matter of time.)

Kowboy, What is Ms. Holierthanthou doing reading a gay publication? Andy, Go for it. My old Neighborhood (gayborhood) in Toledo had many gay couples. They all had great taste, two incomes, and lots of ties to others in the community. |

I guess I won't be doing Ms Holierthanthou's countertop. Imagine the amount of work I would get from the gay community when they find out I turned down Ms. Holierthanthou. They will think I am the second coming. I will not be held hostage by political activist. Everyone has the choice and Ms. Holierthanthou will quickly find that what they are trying to avoid is all around them. |

Andy,
Go for it. My old Neighborhood (gayborhood) in Toledo had many gay couples. They all had great taste, two incomes, and lots of ties to others in the community. Jeff: My wife and I lived in Toledo's Old West End from about 1983-1989 or so. Joe |

Kowboy, I knew you were close to Toledo but didn't know you had lived there. Some of those Old West End homes are phenomenal. I lived in Bancroft Hills next to the University from '94 to '05. Jeff |

I used to advertise in a gay friendly publication in Phoenix. I think it was called HeatStroke. I thought the name was hilarious. I got lots of very good jobs out of it. The combination of dual male incomes provides significant amounts of play money. I first thought about this market when I used to valet. I used to manage the operations of the valet parking at one of the hotels in PHX AZ just after graduating college. One year there was a gay bowlers convention and we had to valet 100's of cars for the gay bowlers. Myself and all the valets wore much tighter shirts and shorts that weekend and our hourly rates surged from the normal 25 to 35 an hour into the $70 range. One our customers was with the publication and he suggested we advertise in it and started talking about the market demographics. I always remembered that - it payed off when I had my countertop company. One of the most expensive multimillion dollar homes I built came from this demographic too. I think it is a great demographic to target. |

I agree, definitely a great demographic to target. They are very discerning of quality and great design and have a substantial disposable income for lifestyle and experiential purchases. We have worked for several and they are very loyal customers, who are quite protective of their environment, so when they get a reliable company with respectful non-judgmental tradespeople they keep coming back. |

Hi all, I read the posts and just closed a deal to market hot pink fabricator toolbelts, with a really gay logo to ya all, with line extensions and options for tight shorts and body fitted muscle shirts for the installers with your company logo on the shirt and across the back of the pants with a pink arrow indicating point of insertion. Any interest? It could add to the bottom line....hahahahahahahahaha! |
