This is a problem I hadn't seen before. I had a job for a customer in an estone brand, and got a call beck after the installation. The customer had noticed (and we concurred) that when the top was drying, you could see streaks in the product. Almost like wet resin areas or something.

After going through most of the cleaning attempts, the problem was still there. The customer wants a new top. We started the process. Upon going to the fabricator to see the new sheet, they noticed the same effect on the replacement sheet. I think it happened on another sheet as well, same brand, different color.

Has anyone ever seen this before?

    Karl,
You guys inspected this as part of the process. I want to be sure you  weren't talking about the same job.
This would have been in Ct. Are you refering to a difeferent inspection?

    Karl,
And I'm assuming with the same brand? I haven't seen it on any other than this one brand (nameless for now).
Thanks for the replies, by the way. I'm surprised I haven't heard it before, as I'm rarely the first out of the chute for estone situations.

I'm hoping our Bejing Braniac can tell me if it is unique to a brand, and what the heck causes it. It seems to be nothing more than one part drying quicker than others, but I don't freaking know, and I'd like to.

    Tom,

Oh now Im a beijing braniac?, in lieu of what do we do with a drunken sailor?. You make me smile but having worked in Breton plants , I will answer you, even tho I agree with Gordon that the Tominator must be  stopped!  Streaks can come from many problems in the Breton system. The raw materials are variable. Its quartz,  they dig it outta hillsides. On top of that, the mixers are cookie mixers, 2 sets of 4 poles spinning around in some sand. Then theres theres this spitter, that deposits the cookie mix on the belt (vibratory compactor) and if  it  all works correctly u get  no streaks. If not, well there is a problem.

In closing have the offenders throw  a boat full of money at me, I can fix that, been thier done that!

While Im not a slut, and dont give it away for free, consider me a high priced courtesean, like that high priced butter substitute , Im that high priced spread.

Let me know when the checks in the mail,

    Lenny

    Lenny,
Bringing the spoken truth to the intertubes around the world, I tip my hat to you.

This brand has more than one plant, in more than one country. The usual suspect, the plant to the north (my North, not your North, which is, like, Siberia, or something), is not where this problem material originates from, which I found interesting. We don't usually hear of problems from the other plant they manufacture out of.

It seems like it is a difference in drying time for evaporation. From what I'm hearing from you, is the problem is deeper than that?

    Dear Tom,

Drying time is all the BS. How could anyone think that? It lies deeper.

    B Rgds,

    Tom

if those sheets come in different sizes from those plants, and this is with a new color I would appreciate a heads up.  Hate to give something the boot, before it gets started.

    Chris,
That's the thing. It's a very old color in the line-up. I never had a customer give me as much as a head's up.

That's part of the reason I'm being careful about the brand. They have some crazy notions on what's acceptable, and the warranty has thinned out quite a bit, but to be honest, I have few problems with the stuff. Not zero, but a pretty good average.

    Tom-

We have been using a surfacing process for e-stone that has been working well and may the answer to this issue. As it is a bit messy, I don't know how good it would be for a whole kitchen, but smaller areas and vanity tops respond well.

Call me directly for details if you wish.  (951) 712 - 8338.  BTW lots of warranties seem to be "thinning" lately.

So is it ok to come out and say that it's Zodiaq?

I remember that one time a couple years ago when we got a slab from them that wasn't bowed, had no streaks, the finish looked great, and it didn't have any big color blotches in it. I think it was just once though.

Most do know that DuPont makes only a portion of the Zodiak line in their own plant, They purchas from several suppliers. The old Granitex plant in Ca makes a very small sheet 52X, so if your getting a larger sheet (55 X) then its not from their plant. Also they are carrying some of the Okite line. Good Luck !
