Any of you using a bar code reader for your CNC.  Chad was telling me about a system that prints out his cut list and it prints a bar code.  The cnc operator scans the code and the job can be cut.  There is no looking for the right file and then cut.

We have a bar code reader on our northwood stone router. It doesn't completely remove all mistakes though. If the computer is not in the right mode, you can scan and get your pod grid and material outline but still have the previous program's code loaded up.

We have a Northwood water jet and use a bar code scanner. Works great for us.

Is it worth the additional expense or a luxury item?

I'm just the shop foreman, so I don't know what it cost. Probably came with the machine. It was a show special at the Vegas Stone Expo a couple (almost 3 years now) years ago.

It comes with the machine so it's tough to say what the cost is. I would say that it's probably a luxury item.

How long does it take to look up a program and open it? 15-30 seconds? It still takes at least 10 to scan in a program with a bar code reader. On a stone router with UHS tools you're probably still only doing 15 setups a day. That's 7 minutes a day the "old fashioned" way and 2.5 minutes with a scanner.

Is the cost worth saving about 20 minutes a week of router time? That's for you to decide.

I like the idea but I think with your input, I'll skip it.  Probably a better idea to put the money towards a digital template system.

Andy,
I would think that in a high production shop it would be quite useful. In a custom shop? No way.
