I went skiing at lunch today and saw six moose on the trails. I got home and back to work and I heard that "growl "I know so well. 3 moose in the yard and these 2 fighting over turf and all withing 25' of my shop door! They exchanged blows with their hooves then had a growling match. The 2nd pic is the 3rd cow I asked to pose for Dave . Dave, can you invision all the fine cuts of meat here? No matter how many we see we still find them interesting. One of the 6 at lunch was a young bull and I noticed one of his antlers was hanging on by a hair, they drop their horns this time of year but I never thought it took any amont of time. Notice the ears back, that means "stay the hell away"! |

Beautiful settings, David.
I'm with Dave on this one, though. I'll take my February in the 70's, thank you.
Although my boys would find use for all that snow, I'll bet......

This was last weekend at the Mammoth Mtn. resort in the Sierra Nevada mtns. |

Gordon, ever see the split snow board? Ive only see them backcountry skiing.(with poles) The board actualy comes apart into a pair of skiis that you can put climbing skins on and then at the top (with poles) you remove the skins , put the board back together and presto! back to knuckle dragging (with poles in your pack) while your pot licker dog runs down the middle of your snow track and helps draw the continuos $ down the face of uncut powder. An yes the poles......at least with tele skiing you can get away with out using poles but it looks like a revolving landing like in ski jumping. |

In my absence here I have been busier than a 1 handed long liner. Building a new office, kid out of school with a soccer fetish and work. I needed a break last night and took a visiting young friend who has recently rejoined the free world ( 4 tours in the middle east, courtesy of uncle Sam) for a nature walk. I was busy showing him signs of recent animal passings only to have him pointing out moose popping up everywhere. We encountered 8 moose by the end of the night some of which have just had their calves, and still with umbilical cords. Fresh tiny little babies! CUTE AS HELL! I have been seeing so many black bears as well. I hope they never meet. Anyway, I am just remarking about how nice it was to smell the flowers. |

our moose season started yesterday so that means I'm haulin butt throught the work day so I can get into the woods more. So brother Dan and are headin to the woods down the road and I look just ahead and I see this bird at the edge of the road near the trail. I stopped to watch it, a little puzzled it doesn't fly off with us being so close. I look closer and I see that it is a raptor of some sort. I approach closer and it hops off into the tall grass. We figured something was wrong with it. I put on some gloves and captured it, imedietly I notice it is a falcon by the knotch in it's beak and pointed wings. Anyway we take it home and I turn it over to a nieghbor who is a retired Fish & Game biologist. A raptor rehabber comes by and identifies it as a female "merlin falcon" Oh yes, I have seen many, man, are they fast! A beautiful bird indeed. I guess we will continue to feed it and daily try to release her. What a treat for Mady to see and be part of. For now shw had to have a midevil name being a huntress and all so Mady named her Guenivere. In the 2nd pic the bird thinks she is being feed by the cookie monster( I told her to wear gloves ? ) |

Andy, I don't know yet. She went off to the raptor re habber today.
I thought she maybe injured a wing but I heard no broken bones.
These little fighter jets fly so fast it's possible she crashed into something while trying to catch prey (song birds).
I saved a sandhill crane earlier this summer too. I was unloading the boat and I heard a rukus, I looked around an saw crows chasing an eagle who was interested in something on the ground. i walked up to the neighbors pond an saw the eagle nail the crane who was encumbered bt a radio on each leg, kinda like forest gump running from the bullys. I guess she survived , a biologist came out to track her. I'm starting to feel like Marty Stouffer. |

Well....darn.....we took the bird to where i found her and we set her up on a limb to adjust to being out again. She flew about 20 ft and stayed put in the tall grass. I had mentioned I saw a goshwk and an owl last night there so the rehabber opted to take her back and let her loose in a large sunroom to see if she needs to build up wing muscles. The concenses is she is a young bird and my have crashed into something. Any falconers out there? If she can't get it together I guess she will go to Anch to a raptor center.
This little creature is so beautiful up close, an proves to be very fiesty! |
