We have had a bunch of undermount sinks provided by customers lately that do not have a template or the temp is not the proper dimensions to fit the sink.

Do you just make your own template or do you instruct the customer to purchase a sink with a temp?

I will make a new template and then I will have it for next time.  That ia my benefit and I don"t feel right passing it on to the cusomer.  If it is a very odd sink and there is not likely to be a next time, well that is just one of the costs of doing busness.  I still fon't pass it on to the customer.  The 20 minutes it takes to make a template is only 1% added labor cost to a job that might take a total of 33 hrs. for fabrication.  Of course it would be more or less depending on the size of the job.

You could always use Kowboys method and you never have to make a template.  I am still tempted to give it a try sometime.  The only thing holding me back is that I don't use the threaded sink mounting plates.  Just my preference.

How do you mount the sink if you don't use the threaded mounts?

Yep.... I said the Dow will go to 6000

Kelsey, I like to make SS strips 1/2" x  1" with a 1/16" x 1/2" rabet in one edge.  Actually I make the 1/16" depth just shy of the flange thickness.  The rabet fits over the flange and the strip is glued to the deck with SS adhesive.

I do that on the front edge, but with all the lifetime warranties these sink people are putting out, I perfer an easier way to get a sink out if need be.

Both mounting methods work.  On the issue of replacing a sink.  In over 18 years of residential work, never had the request made to do so.  If there was a need was to do so it would have to be an identical sink or you would be into intense resizing or even filling in and resizing the cutout.

Also, my cousin Murphy likes to come along on jobs like that and the studs would probably be inaccessible between the sink cabinet side and the adjacent cabinet side.  Deffinately one side would require dishwasher removal.

Cast iron is another story.  I have replaced several of them.  Ugh!!

Eli, I presume you are talking about throwing away the paper template that comes with the sink, and not the template that you make to fit the sink.

carry some extra cardboard with you, clamp the cardboard to the sink and cut most of the middle out. reach in from the top with a pencil and trace the sink out. you now have a template that you can easily adjust to get your desired reveal. just remember that you have drawn it on your template up side down.
